Carrie Wagner Obituary

Carrie Blanton Wagner, age 96, of Gainesville, GA formerly of Rome passed away Tuesday, June 24, 2014.

Mrs. Wagner was born May 5, 1918 in Sylva, North Carolina, a daughter of the late Erastus and Bessie Shuler Blanton. The family moved from the mountains of North Carolina to the community of Possum Trot on the Berry College campus when she was a teen. She told many happy stories of growing up in North Carolina and of life long friendships made at Possum Trot.

As a young woman in the early 1940's she worked for a munitions factory in Macon, GA where she once staged a one person sit in. After returning to work from an extreme case of dermatitis caused by a reaction to gunpowder, she sat on the front steps of the factory and refused to go in until she was placed at a different work station. She moved from Macon to Warner Robins Air Force Base where she worked as a riveter until she married Newton Wagner May 15, 1945. They settled in Rome where they lived most of their married life. Mrs. Wagner was a dedicated and loving wife and mother. She loved gardening, sewing, and cooking. Mrs. Wagner loved Jesus and was a member of Shorter Avenue Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughters Lynette Wagner (Bill) Albright of Bishop, GA and Faye Wagner (Bob) Hill of Big Canoe, GA. Grandaughters Suzanne Eden ( Millo) Antola, Stacey Upthegrove (Charles) Hall, Laura Upthegrove (Michael) Norris, and Stephanie Eden (Christopher) Britt. Eight great grandchildren, a sister Hazel Towe, two brothers Hal Blanton and Walter Blanton, and many nieces and nephews also survive.

Mrs. Wagner was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years Newton Edward Wagner, her parents, a sister Evelyn Gentry, and brothers Winford, Bedford, Charlie, and Cameron Blanton.
