Gedie Ruth (Snead) Braden, 88, 14 Saddle Mountain Road, died early Tuesday morning at her home following an illness of several years. Mrs. Braden was born in Key, Cherokee County, Alabama on Sept. 1, 1927, daughter of the late Oscar Augustus and Doschia (Connell) Snead. She had been a resident of Rome, GA from the mid 1930's throughout the rest of her life. She was married to the late Lawrence Griffin Braden, Jr. at the North Broad Baptist Church in Rome on May 31, 1947. Mrs. Braden was a graduate of Rome High School and a retiree from the Georgia Power Company of Rome where she was employed for over 40 years as an Executive Secretary. Mrs. Braden was of the Baptist faith and a long time member of the North Broad Baptist church where she has many friends who have been so kind and attentive throughout her illness.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Mrs. Braden was preceded in death by her three brothers, Lloyd Cleveland Snead (1910-1975), A. J. Proctor Snead (1912-1977), and John Oliver Snead (1916-1977); by one sister, Betty Jean Snead Gunter (1931-1988).
Survivors include two sisters-in-law, Evelyn Milam Braden and Joella Dew Snead Black, both of Rome; four nephews, Johnny Braden (Marietta), James Elbert Gunter, Jr. (Clarkesville), Nolan Kenneth Snead (Armuchee) and Robert Frank Braden, Jr. (Calhoun); ten nieces, Mary Gail Snead McLeod (Boone, NC), Renee' Lynn Snead Philman (Bell, FL), Deborah Ruth Gunter Cook (Toccoa), Mary Alice Gunter (Rome), Sheryl Lynn Snead Sullins (Rome), Ruth Deleen Snead Watters (Calhoun), Teresa Ann Snead McLocklin (Statham), Melanie Gaye Snead Williams (Bremen), Donna Braden (Rome), and Carol Braden Tull (Birmingham, AL).
Mrs. Braden was an ardent world traveler having visited Europe and Russia among other sites around the world. She is known by all of her friends and family as a devoted cat lover and through the years has lovingly cared for many of them. Her cat friends were especially important to her after losing her husband Griffin. And of course many of the wildlife on Saddle Mountain (deer, raccoons, or whatever) were always sure to get a free meal from her back yard. Mrs. Braden was also an avid reader as evidenced by the many books she kept in her library.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12 in the chapel of Good Shepherd Funeral Home with the Revs. Micah J. Pritchett officiating. Interment will be in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens, Rome.
