Opal Hardin Cook, 94, a lifelong resident of Rome, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 18, 2016, after a 9-day struggle with pneumonia. Mrs. Cook is survived by a son, Walter (Hardy) Cook (Debbie) of Toccoa, GA;a daughter, Donna (Susie) Campbell (James) of Powder Springs, GA; a grandson, Matthew Campbell (Amber) of Armuchee, GA, great-grandsons Ethan Campbell and Owen Campbell; and several nieces and nephews. She was the very loved daughter of William M. and Maude Hardin. Her beloved husband, Walter W Cook, Jr., preceded her in death in 1999, and precious twin-sister Margaret Whitehead in 2014.
A celebration of Mrs. Cook's life will be held at Fifth Avenue Baptist Church on Saturday, May 21, at 11:00 o'clock. The family will receive friends at the church, one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens on Shorter Avenue in Rome. Rev. John Geaney, and Rev. Scott Lambert officiating.
Mrs. Cook worked most of her career in the food industry, first managing the school lunch program at West Rome High School, then Blackstone Hall at Berry College, and ending her career at Berry Academy for Boys.
She was an avid reader, loved gardening, was an artist of oil paintings, and adored her grandchildren.
She accepted Christ as her Savior at a very young age and was a Member of the Fifth Avenue Baptist Church in Rome her entire life, beginning in cradle roll. She served the Lord in the church as a Sunday School Teacher and a Member of the Choir. She served the Lord in her community by giving of herself to help those in need, by sharing all that she had with others, by "loving the Lord her God with all of her heart, with all of her mind, and with all of her strength" and by "loving her neighbor as herself".
This world is a better place because of Opal Cook, and she will definitely be missed.
