James Wesley Howell Sr.

James Wesley Howell, Sr, affectionaly know as Jay Bird or Papa Bird, passed away peacefully on March 10, 2024, at his home in Rome, Georgia. 

He was born on August 19, 1939, in Rome, GA. He worked in the textile industry before retiring from World Carpet. He attended Pepperell High School. And was a member of Holy Ground Church. 

Jaybird's life legacy is characterized by humor, compassion, and kindness. He touched the lives of many with his unwavering humor and dedication to help others struggling with addiction. He spent over 50 years in service to AA and the Star House. Serving for many years on the board of directors.

He loved his family and was happiest at gatherings with them and when he was talking to someone about Jesus or listening to Southern Gospel music. He was also a lifelong, dedicated fan of the Atlanta Braves. 

Jay Bird's presence radiated warmth, and his actions conveyed a profound sense of empathy and love for others. Those who had the privilege of knowing Jay Bird will cherish his memory, and his legacy will continue to inspire everyone touched by his life.

Jay Bird was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Eva Howell.  A cherished son in law Bill Owens, Jr. His precious grandbabies, who he is playing with in heaven now, Cody Ryan Owens and James "Jack" Alexander Howell.  His brothers Fred Howell, Jr., Billy Howell, Tommy Howell, and Larry Howell. His sisters, Mildred Taylor and Arie Burkhalter. 

He is survived by his wife, Martha Joyce Howell. Children Jamie Howell (Lisa), Robin Dowdy (Jeffrey), Raven Holcomb (Derrick), and Tabby Owens.  Grandchildren Britney Liggons, Josh Sisson, Jerica Beam, Jay Howell, Amanda Howell, Dell Owens, Dalton Sisson, Matthew Owens, Dillon Owens, Kayla Rampley and Max Rampley 
12 great grand children and one great great grandchild. 

The family will receive friends Thursday night from 4 PM to 6 PM at Good Shepard Funeral Home. Funeral service immediately following at 6 PM.
