September 20, 1947 – April 19, 2024

Joseph Michael Stewart, Sr., 76, of Rome, Georgia, passed away on Friday, April 19, 2024. Born on September 20, 1947, in Atlanta, Georgia, Joseph was the cherished son of the late Lester Franklin Stewart and Martha Inez Bagwell Stewart.

Joseph leaves behind his beloved wife, Lillie Mae Cronan Stewart, and their three sons: Michael Stewart (Tina), Jason Stewart (Meredith), and Jeff Stewart (Danielle). He was a proud grandfather to Chris Stewart (Amelia), Ryan Stewart (Eileen), Ella Grace Stewart, Blake Stewart, Isaac Stewart and great-grandson Kingsley. His caring nature also extended to his brother, Jack Stewart; his sisters, Carole Kimbell and Pat Horton (Bill); and his sister-in-law, Bonnie Stewart (Larry). 

In addition to his parents, Joseph is predeceased by his brothers, Larry Stewart and Douglas Stewart (Eleanor); his brother-in-law, Gene Kimbell; his sisters, Grace Clark, Virginia Stewart, Mary Lou Stewart, and Linda Stewart; and his sister-in-law, Ailene Stewart (Jack).

A United States Marine Corps veteran, Joseph dedicated himself to his country as a jet engine mechanic and plane captain after graduating from Gordon High School in 1965. His commitment to excellence and teamwork followed him into his civilian life, where he secured a position with Lockheed in Marietta, Georgia, where he contributed to the development of numerous aircraft. His meticulous attention to detail and strong work ethic led to him finally culminating his career as a tool planner on the F-22 aircraft.

Joseph was a pillar of strength and joy for his family and friends. His unique sense of humor and generous spirit brought light and laughter into every room. As a devoted husband, loving father, doting grandfather, and loyal friend, he cultivated relationships with warmth, integrity, and affection.

The ceremonies celebrating Joseph’s remarkable life of honor and service will be held on Friday, April 26, 2024, at Good Shepherd Funeral Home, located at 2750 Shorter Avenue, Rome, Georgia. Visitation will begin at 2:00 PM, followed by a memorial service at 3:30 PM. The service will include a special rendition of Taps to recognize Joseph’s selfless service to our nation. Alan Fuller will do the opening prayer and scripture. Military honors by American Legion Shanklin-Attaway Post 5 from Rome, GA.

Pallbearers include, Chris Stewart, Ryan Stewart, Blake Stewart, Ella Grace Stewart, Isaac Stewart, Bradley Hindmon and Brandon Hindmon with Mathew Self will be the honorary pallbearers. 

Joseph will be laid to rest with military honors at The National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Folds of Honor, a charity that provides educational scholarships to the families of military members who have fallen or been disabled.
