Virlyn Durrett Obituary

In Loving Memory of Virlyn Durrett

July 27, 1929 – April 21, 2024

Virlyn Durrett, 94, a lifelong resident of Rome, Georgia, passed into eternity on April 21, 2024. Born in Carroll County, Georgia, on July 27, 1929, to Willie Earnest Durrett and Mattie Lou Jennings Durrett, Virlyn's journey was one marked by profound dedication to his faith and his family.

Preceded in death by his parents, his adored wife Mattie “Lucy” Gillespie Durrett, his brother Eugene Durrett, and his sisters Martha Enfield and Marion Stogner, Virlyn's legacy is carried forward by his sons, Joel Durrett (Leesa) and Brent Durrett (Diane); his grandchildren, Mandi Johnson (Jeremy), Elizabeth Durrett (Eric), Sarah Peek (Patrick), Emily Wetzel (Tyler), and Ben Durrett (Sara); and his eleven great-grandchildren, each of whom brought immense joy and pride to his life.

Virlyn's life was fundamentally intertwined with his beloved Lucy, whom he married on July 5, 1952. Their union, flourishing over 67 years until Lucy’s passing, was a true testament to their unwavering love and mutual respect. The couple’s commitment was evident in every aspect of their lives, particularly in how Virlyn cared for Lucy during her later years. His devotion to her well-being, ensuring she remained at home in comfort and dignity, spoke volumes about his character and deep-seated love. This enduring partnership was a sterling example of the immense loyalty, love, and affection they shared.

A cornerstone of his community, Virlyn has been a steadfast congregant at Garden Lakes Baptist Church since 1960. His faith is a source of strength and guidance, underpinning his approach to life and love.

Professionally, Virlyn was a dedicated member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers for over six decades. His career at Georgia Power's Plant Hammond spanned from 1957 until his retirement in 1989. As an Assistant Boiler Turbine Operator, Virlyn was known for his diligence and precision, traits that earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues.

Beyond his family and career, Virlyn harbored a passionate interest in gun collecting, with a particular focus on handguns. This hobby was more than a pastime; it was a pursuit that required patience, discipline, and an appreciation for craftsmanship—all qualities Virlyn embodied. His collection became well-known among fellow enthusiasts, and he enjoyed sharing this passion with friends and fellow collectors, often recounting the history and stories behind each piece.

Virlyn was not only a protector and provider for his family but also a doting grandfather and great-grandfather. His legacy of kindness, integrity, and perseverance will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.

A celebration of Virlyn’s remarkable life will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2024, at the Good Shepherd Funeral Home Chapel in Rome, Georgia. The family will receive friends at 11:30 AM, with the funeral service commencing at 12:30 PM. Pastor Jimmy Gentry will officiate. Virlyn will be laid to rest beside his beloved Lucy in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens. Fred Johnson, Isaiah Johnson, Joel Johnson, Ben Durrett, Patrick Peek, and Tyler Wetzel will be pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Virlyn may be made to Garden Lakes Baptist Church, a place close to his heart.
