Eva Akins Obituary

Eva Nell Akins passed away peacefully at her home in Rome, GA on September 19, just two weeks shy of her 95th birthday.

Nell is survived by her son Greg Akins, grandsons Aaron and Dylan, six great-grandchildren, her beloved nieces and nephews, sister-in-law Dot Godwin and one first cousin, Shirley Baker. She is preceded in death by her parents William Allen and Thelma Alberta Godwin (nee Langston), husband Howard, daughter and son-in-law Pat and Mickey Morrison, grandson Jason Morrison, granddaughter Ashley Akins, brothers O.C., Thomas, Julian, William and sisters Helen and Kathrine.

A pillar of the Rome community for more than 70 years, Nell was a member of West Rome Baptist Church and served as president of the Shamrock Garden Club, among many other local activities. She was a successful businesswoman who owned her own company. Nell was known for her impeccable taste and her skills as a seamstress and interior designer, having sewn draperies and bedding for many of the finest homes in Rome. She was one of the first-call wedding planners for years and was especially proud to have planned and directed weddings for her nieces and nephews and the children of many dear friends.

Nell loved to travel, making trips annually to visit family in Sullivan County, PA where she loved to fish for native trout in the pristine creeks and streams. Most-recently Nell visited her grandson Aaron, his wife and two young daughters, one of them her namesake, in Idaho. Nell was a knowledgeable antique collector, having formerly owned and managed popular antique shops in Cave Spring.

Nell was happiest preparing her delicious, extravagant meals. Thanksgiving was the pinnacle, when dozens of family members came to celebrate together around her table. She expressed her love of the Lord by serving others.

Nell had an incomparable strength and remarkable passion for life. Her commitment to family and dear friends was unwavering. She leaves a void in the hearts of all who loved her.
