James Vacter Obituary

James Van Vacter, age 76 of Rome, passed away October 5th, 2020 at his home surrounded by loved ones.

"Grandpa" Jim was a gentle, God-fearing man who cherished his family. Jim was born in 1944 in Rifle Colorado to John and Patricia Van Vacter. Jim had two siblings, his sister Vicki and brother Toby. After moving many times throughout the years growing up, Jim joined the Marines at the age of 17 and served his country proudly for over 4 years. During his time in the Marines and while stationed in California, Jim met his wife Linda. In order to go on their first date, Jim made Linda fill out an "Application to Date a Marine". They were married on January 7th 1967. They had their first daughter Dawn while living in Denver Colorado, and their second daughter Cori while living in Helena Montana. Shortly after moving to Atlanta in 1979, they had their son Jason. This is where they would spend the next 41 years raising their family and watching it grow.

Before anything else, Jim was a devoted and caring husband to Linda, his sweetheart and wife of 53 years. She was first in everything he did and every decision he made. His second passion was tennis. Jim was an avid tennis player and played ALTA into his 50s. Jim also spent many years taking Taekwondo and earning his black belt along with his entire family.

Jim particularly enjoyed annual family vacations, holiday gatherings, and countless activities involving his 9 grandchildren. These events brought him great joy. Another favorite tradition of his was holding season tickets to the Atlanta Falcons with his son Jason for 17 years. Over the course of his life, Jim was also an avid reader and lover of politics. He was always up for a good discussion on current events, but was always careful to be considerate of others' feelings. Finally, Jim was a meticulous planner and a provider to several generations of children and grandchildren. He was always willing to help friends and family in need and reluctant to seek compensation. Jim Van Vacter will forever be remembered as a kind and giving soul that put others before himself to the end of his life.

Jim was preceded in death by his mother and father as well as his sister, Vicki. He is survived by his brother Toby, his wife Linda, his children Dawn, Cori and Jason, and his 9 grandchildren Samantha, Charlynn, Amber, Morgan, Sevie, Maci, Mackenna, Jacob and Caroline. We will miss you Grandpa, but we will see you soon.
