Leona Ray Sargent (Bonnie), age 91, of Rome passed away peacefully at her son's home on Thursday, May 21, 2020 after a short illness. Leona was born in 1929 in Henagar, Alabama to the late James R. Ray, Sr and Birdie Workman Ray. She graduated from Pisgah High School. In 1947 at the age of 18, she moved to Rome and began working for Celanese Fibers Corporation. She retired from Celanese in 1966. While in Rome, she completed a degree at North Georgia Business College.
Leona is preceded in death by her husband of 31 years, Glenn Clayton Sargent, Sr; five brothers - Melvin Ray (Flora), Robert Ray (Mamie), Clyde Ray, Curtis Ray (Francis), James R. Ray, Jr (Shirley); three sisters - Jesse Ray Dutton (GE), Pearl Ray Singleton (Dennis), and Addie Ray Richey (Phillip); and several nieces and nephews.
Leona is survived by two daughters - Sharon Regina Sargent and Dena Marie Sargent Jacobs, one son - Glenn Clayton Sargent, Jr (Heather), three grandchildren - Lindsey Jacobs Howerton (Jeremy), Glenn Clayton Sargent, III, and Gracie Sargent; one great grandson - Jameson Glynn Howerton; and several nieces and nephews.
Leona was an active member of the Etowah Chapter #30 of the Order of the Easter Star for 55 years. During this time she served in several stations throughout her tenure including Worthy Matron in 1979.
Due to COVD quarantine, grave side services were held on Tuesday, May 26, 2020 at Oak Noll Memorial Gardens with immediate and close family members in attendance. Randy Lambert, pastor of Riverside Baptist Church and a close family member officiated. Good Shepard Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
