Tonya Boylan Obituary
Tonya Renee Bowen Boylan (56) passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, November 20, 2013. Tonya was born in LaGrange, Georgia and had lived in Silver Creek, Georgia for the last 15 years.
Tonya was born on April 29, 1957 to Joel Hudson and Shirley Mae Wright Bowen. Tonya graduated from LaGrange High School in 1975. She attended Berry College where she met Philip Randolph Boylan. They married at Berry's Frost Chapel on December 17, 1977. Tonya graduated from Longwood College in Farmville, Virginia in 1983 with a Bachelor's Degree in Home Economics Education.
Tonya and Philip have two sons: Philip Adam Boylan (27) and Thomas Joel Boylan (17), both of Silver Creek, Georgia.
Tonya raised her sons (home schooling Philip though 8th grade) and pursued many creative endeavors including sewing, quilting, doll making and baking. She worked as a volunteer for several non-profit organizations including the Atlanta History Center.
In 2001 she joined her son Philip in the Civil Air Patrol, and it became her life's work. She devoted 12 years to the organization, serving in numerous positions and rising from unit commander of the Rome Squadron to become the Georgia Wing's first female commander. Her most recent post was Inspector General for the Southeast Region.
Tonya is preceded in death by her mother, Shirley Mae Wright Bowen (born June 10, 1937), who passed away on June 19, 1997 and by her father, Joel Hudson Bowen (born January 9, 1933), who passed away June 14, 2013.
Tonya is survived by one sister, Tami Bowen (Randy) Litton of Lilburn, GA and one brother, and John Howell (Mary) Bowen of California, MD. She has seven (7) nieces and nephews: Tiffiny Bowen (Harry) Lipford and Joshua Hawkins Bowen of LaGrange, GA; Garrett Elizabeth Litton of Lilburn, GA; Brett Pierce Bowen, Jacob Darby Bowen and Jeremy Scott Bowen of California, MD
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, November 26, 2013 at Good Shepherd Funeral Home in Rome, GA. Visitation is at 10:00 am and the service is at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a college trust fund for Tonya's son Tommy. Details to follow.
