Mr. Vernon Ardell Gaston, age 64, of Rome passed away Thursday December 18, 2014 in a Rome Medical Center.

Vernon Gaston was born June 12, 1950 in Aragon, Ga. He attended Rockmart High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp in 1967. After Camp Lejeune he was stationed at Okinawa. In Okinawa he became a member of the Honor Guard where his drill team was chosen to perform a parade ceremony for the leaders of Okinawa. He spent the duration of his tour of duty stationed in Vietnam.

As a young parent, he enjoyed coaching his daughter's sports teams and attending basketball games. He later followed his children to music festivals and soccer matches. He and his wife Joyce loved travelling. They especially enjoyed visiting the Caribbean, San Francisco, and Charleston.

He and his wife attended West Rome Baptist Church.

Mr. Gaston was employed by Georgia Power and later retired from Tom Bennett Construction Company. He took pride in showing off his construction projects to his grandchildren.

He had a generous heart and supported various charities such as The American Cancer Society and Toys for Tots. He especially cared about providing food for the homeless and supported the Empty Bowl campaigns.

Over the past few years while in declining health his interests became rescuing animals and providing them a safe and loving home. He spent much time on his porch with his pets and visiting with his neighbors.
