In Loving Memory of Charles Jefferey Dupree
September 24, 1960 – April 14, 2025
Charles Jefferey Dupree, of Summerville, Georgia, drew his last breath on Monday, April 14, 2025, at the age of sixty-five. Born in Rome, Georgia, on September 24, 1960, to Linda Wysong Dupree and the late Charles Waldo Dupree, Charles came into this world with a wild streak in his blood and a six-string dream humming in his heart.
He lived his life like one long, gritty Southern rock song: unapologetically raw, a little off-beat, but honest through and through. He wasn’t a man you could fit into a box. He wasn’t one for fancy talk or polished ways. He worked hard, played hard, and gave what he had without ever expecting much in return. And while the world may have tried to tame him, Charles never let it win.
He had calloused hands and a welder’s precision, having spent most of his life working metal and flame. Welding wasn’t just a job, it was the trade that fed his family and gave his edgy spirit something solid to shape. And when the day’s grind was done, you could find him strumming on a guitar that had seen better days but still sang sweet under his fingers. He wanted to be a rockstar, and to his friends, he already was. They packed out porches and garages just to hear him play, to soak up the grit and gold of his music. He had that kind of magnetism. The kind that didn’t need polish or stage lights to shine.
Charles had his vices, sure. He liked to gamble, and more than once luck didn’t deal him the hand he was hoping for. He was a man who knew what it meant to lose, but he also knew what it meant to give, whether he won or whether he lost. If you needed a couch, a warm meal, or a roof when the night got too cold, his door was open. He didn’t ask where you’d been or what you’d done, just whether you were hungry or tired. That was the kind of man he was. Rough around the edges, yes, but solid at the core.
He leaves behind a family that loved him in all his complexity. His daughter, Ashley Dupree, and his son, Joseph Dupree, carry his name and his determination into the next chapter. His mother, Linda Sywong, remains to remember a son who walked a road all his own. His brothers, Billy Dupree and Keith Dupree, know the deep ache of losing a man who could drive you crazy one minute and defend you like a soldier the next. And Keith’s wife, Dana, gave Charles a kind of tenderness in his final stretch that did not go unnoticed. Charles wanted it known that he was thankful. Deep-down thankful for her care and presence when it mattered most.
