In Loving Memory of David L. Dowdy
February 26, 1966 – April 29, 2026
David L. Dowdy was a man whose story lives in the quiet places: in the hum of a truck engine at dawn, in the scent of cut wood carried on the wind, in the laughter of grandchildren echoing across a yard where he once stood.
David was born on February 26, 1966, in Rome, Georgia, to Daniel Dowdy and Imogene Proctor Dowdy. He came into the world with the kind of hands meant for work, and he spent his life answering that calling. The forests knew him. The trees knew him. He made his living among them by logging, cutting, shaping, and earning not just a wage, but a reputation carved out of sweat, strength, and an honesty that did not bend.
David departed this life on April 29, 2026, at the age of sixty, leaving behind a space that cannot be filled, only remembered.
David was a devoted husband to his beloved Elizabeth Ann Dowdy, a steady presence beside her through the long and ordinary days that make up a life. He was a father whose love did not need many words, because it showed itself in provision, in protection, and in simply being there. His children, Lena Griffin Forsyth, Reecy Dowdy, Joseph Lewis, Skylar Bates, and Samantha Grissom carry forward pieces of him: his resilience, his quiet humor, his way of facing the world head-on.
But it was in the name of “Pawpaw” that David seemed to shine the brightest.
To his grandchildren, Destiny Griffin McBryde, Alyssa Griffin, Hunter Rhyne, Tucker Rhyne, Callie Soles, Ellie Lewis, Holstyn Lewis, Harrisyn Lewis, Remy Bates, Oaklyn Bates, Carrielynn Grissom, JJ Grissom, Josiah Grissom, and Leyli Grissom, he was more than a grandfather. He was a place of safety, of laughter, and of simple joys. Whether it was a ride in a Chevrolet truck, a pocket full of scratch-off tickets, or a day spent outside beneath an open sky, he gave them something that cannot be bought: time, attention, and love that felt as steady as the ground beneath their feet.
David is also survived by his siblings, Michael Dowdy, Mickey Dowdy, Mary Jo Akins, and Gayle Akins, who share with him a lifetime of memories that now feel both distant and near all at once. And by his longtime best friend, Ernest Tramell, who walked beside him through the years, carrying stories only the two of them could fully tell.
David was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel and Imogene Dowdy; his siblings, Alvis Dowdy and Carol Dowdy; and his beloved grandchild, Hudson Lewis, whose name now rests with his in that quiet place beyond this one.
There are things a man loves that speak for him when words fall short. David loved Chevrolet trucks, the kind that carry both burden and freedom. He loved the outdoors, the open, unpolished world where a man can breathe without pretense. He loved his family fiercely, faithfully, without condition. And in the small, simple thrill of a scratch-off ticket, perhaps he held onto a kind of hope that there is always something waiting, just beneath the surface, ready to be revealed.
Family and friends will gather to honor his life on May 4, 2026, at Sander’s Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 1:00 PM, followed by a service at 3:00 PM, officiated by Vance Stiles, with burial to follow. Those carrying him to his rest will be Hunter Rhyne, Tucker Rhyne, Riley McBryde, Gary Bertera, Mikey Dowdy, and Justin Dowdy, with Holstyn Lewis, Harrisyn Lewis, and Josiah Grissom serving as honorary pallbearers.
Good Shepherd Funeral Home is honored to have been entrusted with the arrangements.
And somewhere, in a place where the sky stretches wide and the work is done, one can imagine David still leaning against a truck, looking out over the land, listening to the wind move through the trees as if it were calling his name.
