Debra Johnson Gossett Garrett

Debra Johnson Gossett Garrett, of Rome, Georgia, passed from this earthly life on Sunday, February 8, 2026, at the age of seventy-two. She first opened her eyes to the Georgia light on September 4, 1953, in Rome, Georgia, born to the late George Lindsey and Wincie Schilling Johnson, whose love formed the earliest chapter of her story.

Raised in the town that would remain her lifelong home, Debra carried with her the quiet strength and gentle grace that so often distinguish those who serve faithfully without seeking acclaim. She graduated from West Rome High School in 1971, stepping forward into adulthood with steady resolve. Soon after, she began what would become a long and devoted career as a medical secretary. For many years at Floyd Medical Center, she lent her skill, her diligence, and her warm spirit to the daily rhythms of healing work. In offices where lives were mended and worries eased, Debra became not merely an employee but a trusted presence and a cherished friend to many.

Yet of all the titles she bore, none shone more brightly than that of grandmother. Her beloved daughter, Lindsay Samples (Brian), was her pride, and in her grandsons, Liam Samples and Webb Samples, Debra found her deepest delight. She watched their growth with joy, celebrated their victories with unfeigned enthusiasm, and loved them with a devotion that asked nothing in return. In their laughter, she found music. In their milestones, she found meaning.

Debra is also survived by her close cousin, Jerry Kirkland, whose companionship and kinship were treasures of the heart. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her sister, Janice Johnson, whose memory she carried tenderly throughout her life.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff of Advent Redmond Hospital and Harborview Rome, whose kindness and attentive care brought comfort during her final days. Their service stands as a quiet testimony to the mercy that still walks among us.

A visitation to honor Debra’s life will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at 2:00 p.m., with the Memorial Service following at 3:00 p.m.
