In Loving Memory of Derrick Kenrick
June 2, 1955 – November 15, 2025
Derrick Kenrick (Charley) of Rome, Georgia, passed away on Saturday, November 15, 2025. He was seventy years old. He was born in Tyler, Texas, on June 2, 1955, to the late Hugh Salter and Carrie Cordel Salter.
Charley is survived by his son, Jamie Salter, and his daughters, Carrie Salter, Cindy Salter Prater, and Melissa Salter. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his brothers, Ed Salter, Loyd Salter, and Floyd Salter, and by his sister, Necay Howard.
Charley was of the Baptist faith and carried it the way many country men do, not loudly but with a kind of rooted certainty. He worked on cars all his life, lifting hoods and leaning into engines the way a poet leans into a line, trusting his hands to find what needed mending. Rebuilding and racing cars brought him a sense of purpose and freedom.
Charley enjoyed NASCAR with the same appreciation a man has for anything that moves fast and true. He liked wrestling, enjoyed fishing, where the world grows quiet and time slows its step, and a man can think about the turns his life has taken.
Those who knew him will remember a man who lived close to the earth and to the work he loved. His life, like a well-traveled path through woods and pasture, held its share of bends and long straight stretches, and he walked it with a plainspoken grace.
Good Shepherd Funeral Home is deeply honored to have been entrusted with the arrangements.
