Don Harris Obituary

In Loving Memory of

Don Harris

December 1, 1950 – October 19, 2024

Don Harris, 73, of Rome, Georgia, passed away on Saturday, October 19, 2024. Born on December 1, 1950, in the picturesque town of Blueridge, Georgia, Don was the cherished son of Alvie and Myrtle Belle Harris. He lived a life rich in love, faith, and hard work, leaving a legacy of devotion to his family and an unwavering commitment to his values.

Don is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Debra Harris, who was the love of his life and his constant companion. Together, they built a family rooted in love and support. He is also survived by his sons, Rodney Cameron (Jen), Brad Harris (Nancy), Jeff Harris (Tammy), and Robert Harris; his daughter, Kimberly Matthews; and a large, adoring family of eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, who knew him affectionately as “Paw Paw.” His brothers, Lloyd Harris and Randall Harris; his sisters, Edna Groble, Iva Jean Winkler, Janice Silvers, Lois Brackett (Luther), and Carolyn Worley (Travis), along with several nieces and nephews, also carry forward his memory.

Don is preceded in death by his brothers, Charles Harris, Clifford Harris, Jimmy Harris, and Edward Harris; as well as his sisters, Carzel Dyer (Thomas), Brenda Ross (Mike), and Wilma Southland (Joe), each of whom he held close to his heart.

A devoted family man, Don took immense pride in his role as a loving husband, father, and grandfather. His greatest joy came from spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, playing games, sharing laughter, and creating memories that will be cherished for generations. He was their protector, provider, and their biggest source of strength and love.

Don had a hardworking spirit that extended beyond his family. Self-employed for much of his life, he made a living in the poultry industry, specializing in building chicken houses for farms. His reputation for honesty, reliability, and a tireless work ethic was well-known among his colleagues. Don’s true passion lay in working with cars. He was a skilled mechanic with a knack for giving new life to old engines, Don had a particular fondness for classic cars and could often be found under the hood, tinkering with engines or swapping stories with fellow car enthusiasts. His mechanical expertise was respected by many, and he enjoyed nothing more than cruising in a beautifully restored car, that displayed his dedication and skill.

Though he was retired, Don continued to find fulfillment in the simple joys of life—whether it was working on a classic car, spending time with his beloved dog, Jake, or enjoying peaceful moments with family and friends. His faith was the foundation of his life, and he loved the Lord with all his heart. As a devout member of the Baptist faith, Don’s deep belief in God provided him with strength and guidance throughout his life. He often shared his faith with those around him, serving as a quiet source of inspiration for many.

Services to celebrate Don’s remarkable life and legacy will be held on Friday, October 25, 2024, at the Good Shepherd Funeral Home chapel, located at 2750 Shorter Avenue, Rome, Georgia.
