In Loving Memory of Donald Melton Fleming
April 13, 1952 – August 7, 2024
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Donald Melton Fleming, age 72, of Rome, Georgia, who departed this world on Wednesday, August 7, 2024. Born on April 13, 1952, to the late Ralph and Maybelle Fleming, Donald's life was a testament to hard work, dedication, and unwavering love for his family.
Donald was a man of integrity, known for his work ethic, loyalty, and the quiet strength he carried throughout his life. From a young age, he learned the value of hard work, a principle that guided him throughout his career. He found his calling in construction, where he specialized in drywall. Donald's hands shaped countless homes and buildings, leaving behind not just walls but the foundation for families to grow and create memories of their own. He took immense pride in his work, ensuring that every task was done to the best of his ability, never cutting corners, and always striving for perfection.
But Donald’s life was not defined solely by his work. He was a man of many passions, and these interests filled his days with joy and purpose. Fishing was one of Donald's greatest pleasures. The tranquility of the water, the patience required, and the thrill of the catch provided him with a deep sense of peace. Whether casting a line into a quiet lake or wading through a rushing river, Donald found solace in nature and cherished the moments of calm it brought him.
Music also played a significant role in Donald’s life. He had an ear for a variety of genres, finding comfort and connection in the melodies and lyrics that resonated with him. Music was his companion during both the good times and the challenging moments, offering a way to express emotions that words sometimes could not. Similarly, Donald had a deep appreciation for movies, seeing them as a form of storytelling that could evoke a wide range of emotions. He enjoyed getting lost in a good film, whether it was a classic western, a heartwarming drama, or an action-packed thriller.
Above all else, Donald’s greatest love was for his family. He was a devoted father to his children: Joseph Jackson, Eddie Fleming, and Larry Dotson, and his daughter, Jennifer Jackson. His children were his pride and joy, and he always strived to be a pillar of support and guidance for them. Donald’s love extended to his grandchildren, Brianna Townsend, Kansas Jackson, Zak Adamczack, Austin Jackson, Jordan Vanmeter, Joey Ford, Damian Hesler, Chloe Fleming, and Ethan Fleming. He relished the role of a grandfather, cherishing the time spent with his grandchildren and the special bonds they shared. Family gatherings were moments he treasured, filled with laughter, stories, and the warmth of togetherness.
Donald’s sense of family extended beyond his immediate circle. He shared a close bond with his siblings, Steve Fleming and Dorothy Baker. The shared memories of childhood, the challenges of adulthood, and the support they offered each other throughout life’s ups and downs were the threads that wove their lives together. Donald was a brother who could be counted on, who listened without judgment and offered advice when needed, but most importantly, who was always there.
In addition to his parents, Ralph and Maybelle Fleming, Donald is preceded in death by two of his beloved grandchildren, John Lecroy and Ronnie Jackson. The loss of these young lives weighed heavily on his heart, and he carried their memory with him every day.
Though Donald has left this earthly life, his legacy lives on through the lives he touched, the family he cherished, and the work he did. His spirit, characterized by resilience, kindness, and love, will continue to guide those who knew him. Donald's journey was one of quiet heroism, defined not by grand gestures but by the everyday acts of love and hard work that made a difference in the lives of those around him.
To honor and celebrate Donald’s life, his family will hold a service on Saturday, August 17, 2024, at the Good Shepherd Funeral Home chapel. The visitation will begin at 11:00 AM, offering a time for friends and loved ones to pay their respects and share memories. The funeral service will follow at 1:00 PM, a ceremony to reflect on and commemorate a life well-lived, a life that touched so many and left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew him.
