Dorothy Vanlandingham Obituary

In Loving Memory of Dorothy Vivian VanLandingham

January 3, 1930 – September 9, 2024

Dorothy Vivian VanLandingham, 94, a cherished resident of Rome, Georgia, passed peacefully on Monday, September 9, 2024, surrounded by those who loved her most. Born in Detroit, Michigan, on January 3, 1930, Dorothy was the beloved daughter of the late William Lester Andrews and Inez Elaine Stillwell. Her life’s journey was marked by grace, warmth, and an unwavering love for her family, friends, and community.

From her earliest days, Dorothy’s vibrant spirit and natural gift for hospitality made her the heart of every gathering. A skilled cook, she was known for preparing meals that were as rich in flavor as they were in love. Cooking wasn’t just a pastime for Dorothy; it was an expression of her deep love for others, a way she nurtured and brought people together.

Dorothy had a deep affection for travel and exploration, especially if it led her to a destination where she could test her luck at a casino. Dorothy found joy in the thrill of the game, and her adventurous spirit was an inspiration to all who knew her.

Dorothy also had a soft spot for animals, particularly her beloved dogs, who were her loyal companions throughout the years. Her compassion extended beyond people, and she found solace in the unconditional love and comfort her pets provided her.

Her professional life was no less remarkable. Dorothy served as the Deputy Clerk of the United States District Court in the Rome, Georgia Division for nearly five decades. Her career was a testament to her meticulous work ethic, dedication, and her belief in the importance of justice and order. Dorothy's presence in the courthouse was not only marked by her professionalism but also by the kindness and respect she extended to all who crossed her path.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her nephew, Steve Cook, and her former husband, Edwin Gale Allred. She is survived by her loving son, David Allred, and her sister, Doris Cook, nephew and niece, Jaime Cook and Susan Fox. Her legacy continues through her great-nieces and great-nephews: Jennifer Holloway, Allison Fox, Adam Cook, and Charlie Cook and several great-great nieces and nephews all of whom held a special place in her heart.

Her love for family, friends, and life will be celebrated during a graveside service on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at 10:00 AM at Oaknoll Memorial Gardens. Those who knew her are invited to come together to honor a life well-lived, a life full of laughter, love, and grace.

Dorothy will be deeply missed, but her spirit, her laughter, and the love she gave so freely will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.
