Mr. Elton Hodges, age 87, of Cave Spring, Georgia, passed away Sunday, August 27, 2023, surrounded by his loved ones.
Elton Hodges was born at home on January 6, 1936, to the late Elmo and Gertrude Hodges on land in Cave Spring, Georgia, that has been in the family since at least 1920. He moved several times from Cave Spring, to Rome, Georgia, and back to Cave Spring Other places Mr. Hodges lived in Macon, Georgia; Phenix City, Alabama; Ensley, Alabama; and Gardendale, Alabama.
Mr. Hodges met his late wife, Vivian Marie Maddox Hodges, at Norman Junior College, but did not date her until after they both graduated from there. They dated for two years and married on June 21, 1958, in Cairo, Georgia. Mr. and Mrs. Hodges celebrated fifty-four years of marriage before Mrs. Vivian Hodges died on September 2, 2012.
Mr. Hodges attended Norman Junior College in South Georgia from 1954 to 1956, where he worked on campus to pay for his schooling. He said he made about $0.73 per hour. Mr. Hodges was registered in theology at Howard College in preparation for the Baptist Church Ministry. He was inducted into the United States Army on August 13, 1959, where he did his basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. Mr. Hodges served as a chaplain’s assistant in Fort Benning, Georgia. These words were spoken about him in his farewell letter, “It is difficult to lose a man who knows his job well and who unstintingly and untiringly devotes himself to it.” Mr. Elton Hodges completed his service in the United States Army in August of 1965. He then worked in the chemical department for the U.S. Pipe and Foundry in Birmingham, Alabama.
Upon moving back to Cave Spring, Georgia, to be near family, Mr. Hodges worked in the maintenance department at the Georgia School for the Deaf from 1975 until he retired on June 5, 1998.
Survivors include his son David Hodges (Krissy Carnes) of Cave Spring, Georgia; his daughter Donna Jackson (Dennis) of Sylacauga, Alabama; his grandchildren Deven Jackson (Shelby); and great-grandchildren Lanie and Daniel of Fort Riley, Kansas; Denée Jackson of Saraland, Alabama; Dylan Jackson (Brittney) of Sax, Alabama; William Hodges, of Rome, Georgia; his brother, Paul Hodges of Cave Spring, Georgia and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, September 1, 2023, at First Baptist Church of Cave Spring, Georgia, located at 4 Old Cedartown Rd, Cave Spring, GA 30124, with Pastor Jarrod Kinsey and Jimmy Lewis Officiating. Interment will be in State Line Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Thursday, August 31, 2023 at First Baptist Church of Cave Spring.
