In Loving Memory of Frieda Mitchell
June 2, 1933 – June 23, 2025
Frieda Mitchell, age ninety-two, of Centre, Alabama, passed into her eternal rest on Monday, June 23, 2025. She was born on June 2, 1933, in Broomtown, Alabama. She was the daughter of the late Arthur “Con” Shamblin and Berkie Leath Shamblin.
She married Earl Jerome Mitchell, together, they raised two sons, Steve Jerome Mitchell, who preceded her in death, and Michael Earl Mitchell (Carolyn), who remains to carry forward her name, her lessons, and her quiet strength.
Frieda was no stranger to loss. Alongside her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her grandson, William Mitchell; her brother, Frank Shamblin; and her sisters, Sue Croft, Katherine Russell, Jane Poovey, Ida Ruth Campbell, and Wilma Baird. But Frieda lived not in the shadow of what was lost, but in the warm, abiding glow of what remained. She held close to her heart her grandchildren: Phillip Mitchell (Emily), Matt Mitchell (Katie), Michael S. Mitchell (Allison), and Ben Mitchell (Hillary) and her three great-grandchildren: Anna Claire Mitchell, Michael Mitchell and Hugh Mitchell. Frieda also leaves behind the children of her own siblings, her beloved nieces and nephews: Janice Fulmer, Tammy Hass, Kathy Baird, Gayle Randall, John Brandon Russell, Cecilia Poovey Hudson, Connie DeFord, Patrick Millsap
She worked for many years as a lab technician at Integrated Products, Inc., yet her most lasting work was never done in a laboratory. It was in the kitchen, where the sweet scent of fried hand pies. given away with cheerful generosity, lingered long after the last bite. It was in the pews of Garden Lakes Baptist Church, where Frieda was a longtime member, faithfully serving and lifting up others in word and deed. It was in the quiet companionship of her cat, Eli, whose soft purring filled the quiet corners of her later years. And it was in her ministry to others, not as preacher or prophet, but as a woman who simply showed up with comfort, with prayer, and with pie when others were hurting.
Services to celebrate Frieda’s life will be held on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, at the Good Shepherd Funeral Home chapel. Visitation will begin at 12:00 PM, and the funeral service will follow at 2:00 PM. Frieda will be laid to rest at Oaknoll Memorial Gardens at 3:00 PM, among flowers and sunlight and the hush of remembrance. Dr. Jimmy Gentry, retired from Garden Lakes Baptist Church will officiate.
She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, resilience, and homegrown wisdom.
Good Shepherd Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
