In Loving Memory of Gary Wayne Mitchell
March 1, 1948 – June 12, 2024
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Gary Wayne Mitchell, 76, of Rome, Georgia, who left us on Wednesday, June 12, 2024. Gary was born on March 1, 1948, to the late Clyde Mitchell and Mildred Mary Odom Mitchell. His life was one brilliantly filled to the bursting with love, loyalty, and dedication.
Gary is survived by his devoted wife of fifty-six years, Claudia Mitchell, with whom he shared a beautiful and enduring love. He was a proud father to his son, Michael Bradley Mitchell, and his daughter, Heather L. Harvey. His legacy lives on through his grandchildren, Megan Thompson, Hannah Harvey, Alyssa Olivas, Claudia Harvey, and Niki Mitchell, as well as his great-grandchild, Shiloh Olivas.
A native of Rome, Gary was a standout student-athlete at East Rome High School, where he excelled in both basketball and baseball, earning All-Star honors. After high school, he attended Shorter College, where he continued to cultivate his academic and athletic talents. Gary's sense of duty and patriotism led him to serve his country in the United States Marine Corps, completing a tour in Vietnam.
Gary's professional life was marked by dedication and hard work. He was known for his integrity, work ethic, and unwavering commitment to his family and community. Outside of his professional achievements, Gary found joy in the simple pleasures of life—spending time with his family, sharing stories, and watching his favorite sports teams.
A wake to honor and celebrate Gary's remarkable life will be held at the family home on Friday, June 21, 2024. This gathering will be a time for friends and family to share their memories and pay tribute to a man who touched the lives of so many with his kindness, wisdom, and unwavering spirit.
Gary Wayne Mitchell will be deeply missed, but his legacy of love, honor, and devotion will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Parnick Jennings Good Shepherd Funeral Home, ensuring that Gary's final journey is handled with the utmost caer and respect.
