Gene Cowart Sr.

Gene Cowart Sr., 92, passed away Saturday, June 1, 2024, at Calhoun Health Care Center in Calhoun. He was born April 23, 1932, in Floyd County. He was employed at Pepperell Mills in Lindale and at Inland Container in Coosa when he retired in 1994. He was a member of Heritage Baptist Church in Calhoun.

He was the founder of the gospel music program held each Saturday morning at McDonald on Turner McCall in Rome for the past 20 years which they still have every Saturday. He had three singing groups: Gospel Jubilaires, The Cowart’s and The New Sounds. He led singing in various churches and was a choir member of Heritage Baptist Church.

His hobbies were singing, playing pool and gardening.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence Cowart and Louise Smith Cowart, three sisters, Mary Kinsey, Marjorie “Margie” Thompson and Pauline “Polly” Southard; two brothers, Harold Cowart and Tommy Cowart; his wife Annie Lou “Ann” Cowart, mother of the children all of Rome.

Surviving is his wife, Beverly Cowart of Rome; three sons, Greg Cowart of Calhoun, Dwight Cowart of Douglasville and Gene Jr. “Bobby” Cowart of Rome; one daughter, Deborah “Debbie” Demonia or Rome; seven grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers are Eddie Ellenburg, Wesley Thomas, Lamar Benton, Sam Peppers, Terry McClure and Steve Williams. Honorary pallbearers are members of Heritage Young at Heart Sunday School Class, Rayburn Mitchell, Johnny Crawford, Butch Gardner, Eddie Green, Gary Young Brooke, Alyssa and Tim of Hospice and Lewis Dennis.

Funeral Service will be held at Heritage Baptist Church in Calhoun at 2:00PM with Bryson Frix, Marshall Bryan and Shane Parrott officiating. Greg Cowart will do the eulogy.

The family will receive friends at Good Shepherd Funeral Home in Rome, GA on Tuesday, June 11 from 6:00PM-9:00PM and he will lie in state at Heritage Baptist Church in Calhoun on Wednesday, June 12 from 11:00AM till Funeral Service at 2:00PM. A Private Graveside will be held at a later date.
