With great sadness, we announce the passing of Glenda G. Bracewell Thomas, aged 87, on December 22, 2023, in Rome, Georgia. Born in Oconee, Florida, on October 12, 1936, she was the cherished daughter of Riley James Bracewell and Melba Grace Bracewell.
Glenda's life was a beautiful tapestry of love and resilience, woven with the threads of family bonds and enduring friendships. She was predeceased by her devoted husband, Billy Thomas; her brothers, Larry Bracewell, Jimmy Bracewell, and Keith Bracewell (Smokey. Her legacy continues through her daughters, Sherry Battle, Debra G. Thomas, Lesa G. Jacot, and Tena A. Parker; her adoring grandchildren, Ryan, Brandon, Daniel, Amanda, Shelby, and Cearra, Nolan and Saryn; and her treasured great-grandchildren, Chase, Sarah, Noel, Jordan, Avallen, Arin, Jaden, Zachary, and Bollen. Her memory is also fondly cherished by her brothers-in-law, Wendell Thomas (Kay) and Danny Thomas (Heather); and sister-in-law, Wanda Jordan.
A matriarch in her own right, Glenda's heart encompassed not only her immediate family but extended to her in-laws, whom she loved as her siblings. This love was deeply reciprocated, creating an unbreakable bond of mutual affection and respect. Glenda's remarkable ability to find joy in life, and the peace that she carried with her, became a source of inspiration to all who knew her. Her presence was a haven of comfort, her smile a beacon of warmth, and her wisdom a guide for many.
In 1954, Glenda moved from St. Simon Island to Rome, Georgia, where she and Billy bought and successfully operated a beloved mom-and-pop grocery store in South Rome. Their store was more than a business; it was a heart of the community where they helped everyone with genuine kindness and a golden heart. Glenda's nurturing spirit extended to caring for Billy's siblings during their mother's illness, and the love from Billy’s family deepened that much more. She was an active and cherished member of South Broad Baptist Church and later West Rome Baptist Church. The union of Billy and Glenda was evidence of their partnership and love. They were always seen together as a perfect team. Her love for her children was profound, and this love extended to all who crossed her path. After retirement and Billy's passing, their daughter Debbie came to live with Glenda and never left her side, reflecting the treasured bond she shared with her mother.
Glenda's life was a beacon of joy and adventure. She embraced life enthusiastically, whether square dancing with her family or facing challenges head-on. Her infectious smile and vibrant personality brought light and laughter to those around her. Her unwavering faith and the peace she found in life's simple joys were an inspiration to many.
