Grady Henderson Obituary

In Loving Memory of Grady Louise Warmack Henderson

October 27, 1926 – April 14, 2025

Grady Louise Warmack Henderson, age ninety-eight, passed gently into rest on the morning of Monday, April 14, 2025, in the familiar comfort of Rome, Georgia, a town she came to know as home, though her story began in the foothills of Dalton, Georgia, on October 27, 1926. She was born to Odelle Warmack and Elizabeth Greenway, whose names echo back through time like whispers caught in the folds of ancient drapes and quilted memories.

Her name, Grady Louise, carried a sturdiness and a sweetness, just like the woman herself. The kind of name that once appeared regularly on lace-stitched handkerchiefs or in faded letters folded into cookie tins, kept safe in dresser drawers. She belonged to an era of women who understood instinctively how to make do, to endure, and above all, to love deeply, loyally, and with a kind of quiet grandeur.

Grady was a housewife by calling, not merely by title. That was her life’s work. Keeping a home, raising a family, and ensuring the heartbeat of her household thumped steady and warm through days both hard and honeyed was her joy. She did this not for recognition, but because it was what her hands knew, and her heart required. Her kitchen was a place where cast iron carried the fragrance of fried chicken and cornbread, and where grandchildren learned that food could say "I love you" better than words. The walls she polished and the floors she swept bore witness to a lifetime of care.

She loved her son, Jerry Henderson, with a mother’s devotion, deep and wide. Together with his wife, Barbara, whom Grady also loved dearly, they built a closeness that stretched over decades and across the seasons of life. Though she suffered the sorrow of burying Jerry, her daughter Rhoda who passed in infancy, her grandchild Stephanie, and her great-grandchild Bella Jacks, she bore such grief with a faith that held steady like a lantern in a storm.

Her faith, after all, was no small thing. Grady belonged to the North Rome Church of God, and she found her deepest joy not in fanfare but in the simple, radiant truths of scripture and prayer. She did not preach her faith; she lived it in the way she listened, in the way she offered a dish or a word just when it was needed most.

She was the kind of woman who liked to keep her hands busy and her heart open.

In her younger years, Grady enjoyed shopping trips and camping outings always with family in tow. She loved doting on her grandchildren, and her bond with her great-grandson Jamey, and his wife Shayla, held a special tenderness, the kind that lingers in the corners of the heart long after the room has gone quiet.

Grady is survived by her daughter-in-law Barbara Henderson; her grandchildren Lisa Ammons and Christopher Henderson; her great-grandchildren Jessica Combs, Jamey Combs, Brody Ammons, Beth Scott, Wes Scott, Hannah Henderson, and Christopher Henderson; and her great-great-grandchildren Ava Selman, Chance Selman, Addyson Freeman, Kennedy Scott, and Anderson Scott.

Grady leaves behind the enduring evidence of a life well-lived and well-loved. Her stories are now told in the way her great-great-grandchildren laugh. She is gone, yes, but never truly far.
