Harold "Slim" Schronce Obituary

In Loving Memory of

Harold Edgar "Slim" Schronce

June 24, 1944 – August 30, 2025

On Saturday, August 30, 2025, Harold Edgar “Slim” Schronce laid down the burdens of this world and went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Born on June 24, 1944, Harold was the youngest son of Conley and Louise Schronce of Gaston County, North Carolina. In a household bustling with twelve children, he was the last of the boys, carrying both the blessing and the weight of being the youngest in such a large and lively family.

Harold’s life was shaped by deep love and deep loss. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of forty years, Ruth Schronce, with whom he raised a family and shared a lifetime of devotion. He also mourned the passing of his daughter Jody Lynn, his eldest son Timothy, his granddaughter Ashley, his brothers Bill Schronce and Robert Adams, and his sisters Mildred Adams Gregory and Betty Adams Berry. Yet even amidst sorrow, his heart remained open. He found companionship again with his wife, Jeanine Strange Schronce, who faithfully stood by him in his later years.

He leaves behind a family knit closely by his care and example: his daughter Lori Lowery; his sons Tony Schronce (Misty), and Richard Schronce (Julie); and his stepdaughters Patti, Mandy, and Kristi. His legacy extends through his grandchildren: Michael McGill, Corey Rouse, Mandi Rouse, Kelsey Schronce, and Rashaun Schronce, as well as five great-grandchildren who knew him as both a gentle giant and a tireless playmate. Harold is also survived by his sisters Rebecca St. Laurent, Vernell Causby, and Kathy Schronce, who will remember him as the baby brother whose laughter filled their childhood home.

Harold’s faith was the compass of his life. He read his Bible daily and prayed with a constancy that anchored those around him. With Jeanine, he found joy in listening to their favorite pastor, Allen Jackson of Murfreesboro, Tennessee. His devotion to God was inseparable from his devotion to his family: he was protector, provider, and the steady center of their lives.

For many years, Harold worked with Duke Power, a career that supported his family and allowed him to build a life of stability and service. Yet beyond his work, his true joy was found in the roles that gave him to others. He was a coach in his younger years, guiding teams in football and baseball, and even serving as an umpire. The young men he once coached never forgot his voice urging them forward, nor the impression he left on their lives with a reminder to strive for better, both on the field and beyond it.

He was, in every sense, a sportsman. His love of sports was so immense that he even opened a sports memorabilia store. This was a place where his passion found a home. And when he wasn’t cheering or coaching, he could often be found fishing by a creek, on the banks of a river, or along the ocean’s edge. Whether alone with his thoughts or teaching a child how to hold a rod, Harold found peace in those quiet waters. He also delighted in cowboy and western shows, stories of grit and honor that matched his own plainspoken, steady nature.

To his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Harold was not only a patriarch but a big-hearted “teddy bear,” a jungle gym, a place of refuge and laughter. To friends and neighbors, he was the kind of man you remembered long after the first handshake. He was genuine, kind, and brimful of love. He lived with a largeness of spirit that drew people in and kept them close.
