Howard Lewis Obituary

In Loving Memory of Howard Dulane Lewis
October 2, 1939 – May 2, 2025

With tender hearts and reverent spirits, we mark the homegoing of Mr. Howard Dulane Lewis, who departed this life on Friday, May 2, 2025, at the age of eighty-five. A native son of Rome, Georgia, he was born on October 2, 1939, to the late George Howard Lewis and Rhetta Ruth Odom Lewis, whose love shaped his earliest days.

Howard’s earthly pilgrimage was one of quiet strength and steadfast devotion. He now joins in eternity his beloved wife, Brenda Ellen Newman Lewis; his cherished grandson, Barry Donavan Hobgood; his brother, James Paul Lewis; and his sister, Louise Lewis Carpenter. The bonds of family were his treasure, and though many have gone before him, their memories dwell forever in the hearts of those who remain.

He leaves behind a living legacy through his children: daughters Mona Kay Williams (Danny), Kimberly Lewis Ogle (Jeff), Tammy Lewis Hobgood (Donald), Rhonda Lewis, and Carol Tillery; sons Howard D. Lewis Jr. (Allison), Timmy Lewis, James Wilson (Teresa), and Daniel Morrison. His lineage extends to eighteen grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren, each carrying forward a portion of his spirit and love.

Endowed with a remarkable gift for mending what was broken, Howard could hear what machines could not say. With no need for wires or screens, he could listen to the hum of a troubled engine and know its ailment. Neighbors and strangers alike traveled many miles to seek the touch of his hands that repaired with care, not haste.

His skill in woodworking revealed an artist’s soul. Where others saw rough lumber, Howard saw hidden beauty. He shaped wood into wonder, crafting pieces that bore both strength and grace. His garden, too, bore testimony to his labor and love: rows of the best tomatoes in town, and a harvest that fed both body and spirit. In his soil, as in his heart, grew good things.

But perhaps the brightest joy of his life was found in the laughter of his grandchildren. When they entered the room, his broad and bright smile met them first, followed by the gleam in his eyes that told of stories, secrets, and unending love. There was no pretense in his affection; it was as true and warm as summer sun.

Howard Dulane Lewis leaves behind more than memories; he leaves behind a testimony of diligence, humility, craftsmanship, and love. As we bid him farewell, we do so with hearts full of gratitude for the time we were given and for the example he set.

May his soul now rest in the eternal peace of the Lord, where hands grow weary no more and gardens bloom without end.
