In Loving Memory of
Huey C. Tyler
February 13, 1938 – December 10, 2024
Huey C. Tyler, aged 86, of Rome, Georgia, departed this earthly life on a quiet Tuesday, December 10, 2024. Born on February 13, 1938, in the humble, red-clay town of Veto, Alabama, Huey was the cherished son of Samuel and Nina Tyler, whose memory he carried with steadfast reverence all his days.
He is now reunited in eternal rest with his beloved wife, Virginia Tyler, a love kindled in the hallways of Johnson High School and nurtured through 54 years of marriage, until her passing left a hollow echo in the heart of his home. Preceding him as well are his brothers, Hollis Tyler, Marvin Tyler, and Nancell Tyler, and his sisters, Sue Tanner Evette and Celia Puckett, each a thread in the tapestry of family he held so dear.
Huey leaves behind a living legacy in his children: his sons, Tony Tyler and David Tyler (Lisa); his daughters, Pam Tyler Shepard (Belton) and Mitzi Tyler Jeter (George); and his grandchildren, Rhiannon Nicholson, Julia Harris, Beth Guice, Michelle Lane, Melissa Hammock, David Tyler, Jr., and Amy Tyler. His legacy blooms further in ten great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren, who will carry forward the lessons and laughter he imparted. His surviving brothers, Howard Tyler and Sam Tyler, Jr., along with a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family, will long remember his steadfast love and boundless humor.
A master carpenter by trade, Huey’s hands told stories of wood and nail, of homes shaped with precision and pride throughout Rome and Floyd County. Each house was not just a structure but a testament to his craftsmanship and dedication, as well as a sheltering testament to lives lived within walls he built. Huey embodied a life of honest labor and upright character, guided by a moral compass that never wavered.
Graduating from Johnson High School in 1956, Huey was a scholar of life as much as academics, excelling as an athlete who earned five baseball scholarships, which is a feat that spoke to his discipline and tenacity. Yet, it was the game of golf that captured his leisure hours, a pastime he shared joyfully with family and friends. He also found solace and spirit in the strum of a guitar, weaving melodies as effortlessly as he spun his signature card tricks and jokes, each delivered with the mischievous sparkle of a storyteller born.
Huey's life was woven with moments both grand and simple. Trips to Florida for the greyhound races with his brother-in-law, Cecil Salman, were as cherished as the quiet afternoons spent enjoying his favorite pastimes. To know Huey was to know a man who delighted in the world’s small joys and who met life with a smile, a song, and a deep, abiding honesty.
A celebration of Huey’s extraordinary life will take place on Saturday, December 14, 2024, at the Good Shepherd Funeral Home chapel, located at 2750 Shorter Avenue, Rome, Georgia. Visitation begins at 11:00 AM, followed by a funeral service at 1:00 PM. Chris Lodge will deliver the message, and Leslie Walker will offer opening and closing remarks. Huey will find his final resting place among the whispering trees of Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.
In the spirit of Hughey’s legacy, we invite all who knew him to join in remembering a man whose life was a hymn of love, labor, and laughter: a song that will linger in the hearts of his family and friends for generations to come.
Parnick Jennings Good Shepherd Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
