James Hales Obituary

James “David” Hales, 70, of Rome, Georgia, passed away on Thursday. June 1, 2023. He was born to the late James Thomas Hales and Freida Luis Middleton Hales in Birmingham,
Alabama, on April 26, 1953.

In addition to his parents, David is also preceded in death by his sister Marilyn “Elaine” Hales Holcomb. David is survived by his nephew Nathan Holcomb and his cousin Ella Mae Randall. He also
leaves behind many dear friends.

David was a faithful member of Lakeview Baptist Church. He was also an assistant scoutmaster of Troop 34 of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). Participating in an advanced leadership
training program designed for adult leaders involved in the (BSA), David earned his Wood Badge, which aims to enhance leadership skills, deepen understanding of scouting principles,
and foster personal growth. He received the Order of the Arrow (OA) Vigil Honor, which is a prestigious recognition within the (BSA). It is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon
members of the Order of the Arrow, which is Scouting's national honor society. The Vigil Honor is a lifelong distinction awarded to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional dedication,
service, and commitment to the principles of the (OA) and Scouting. David graduated from Coosa High School class of 1971. He attended Coosa Valley Tech and became a skillful electrician. He retired from Lowe's in Rome, GA. David was also an avid reader and runner, he ran many successful races with his dear mother.


David was the poster child of Cheerful Service. The Brotherhood of Cheerful Service is a fundamental principle and motto of the Order of the Arrow (OA), Scouting's national honor
society in the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). It embodies the spirit of selflessness, enthusiasm, and dedication to serving others that is central to the (OA)'s mission and purpose. He also
received the Founder's Award, which is a prestigious recognition within the (BSA) that is presented to individuals who have made significant contributions to the (OA). The Founder’s
Award is named in honor of the founders of the OA and serves as a tribute to their vision and leadership. It is a special recognition bestowed upon Arrowmen who have exemplified the ideals
of the (OA) and demonstrated outstanding dedication, service, and leadership. It recognizes those individuals who have gone above and beyond in their commitment to the principles and
mission of the OA.


David was a hiking and scouting enthusiast. He participated in many hikes with friends and the Boy Scouts. Some of his most treasured and memorable hikes took place at the Philmont Scout
Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico. At Philmont, David embarked on backpacking treks that always ended in an unforgettable adventure that exceeded the expectations of everyone who
participated. Philmont features a vast and breathtaking wilderness that consists of expansive forests, towering peaks, and crystal-clear streams. To David, Philmont was paradise on Earth.

On Thursday, June 8, 2023, David’s family and friends are holding a visitation at 5:00 PM, and a memorial service to celebrate his life will begin at 6:00 PM at Good Shepherd Funeral Home
located at 2750 Shorter Avenue, Rome, Georgia 30165.
