Jerry Flynt Obituary

In Loving Memory of Jerry Wesley Flynt

September 2, 1935 – March 27, 2025

Jerry Wesley Flynt was a man whose presence seemed shaped by the land he came from. He was molded by cedar winds and rustling leaves, by muddy rivers and the hush of pine-thick woods. He departed this world on Thursday, March 27, 2025, at the age of eighty-nine, in Rome, Georgia. Born on September 2, 1935, in Cedartown, Georgia, to the late JW and Marie Flynt, Jerry carried the soul of the South in his bones.

Life carved its deep lines into Jerry, as it does with those who live long and well. He was no stranger to sorrow, having bid farewell to his beloved wife, Patti, in 2012 Her loss was one that sat heavy on his shoulders yet never dimmed his generous spirit. He was also preceded in death by his brothers Harold and George, and his sisters Peggy Roberson, Martha Sadler, and Barbara Jean Flynt. Yet, Jerry never seemed alone, not really. Even when the porch lights dimmed and the supper table grew quiet, he remained surrounded; by memory, by kinship, by love that did not require presence to remain palpable.

He is survived by his devoted son, Steve Wesley Flynt; his treasured granddaughter, Chelsea Pirtle (Loren); and the radiant joys of his later years, his great-grandchildren, Charlie and Storie Pirtle, whose laughter filled up the spaces that grief had once hollowed out. A constellation of nieces and nephews also remain, each carrying some glimmer of Jerry’s unmistakable warmth, his sly wit, or perhaps his profound respect for the natural world.

Jerry lived like a man in constant conversation with the elements. An avid outdoorsman, he did not merely admire nature, he understood it, as one might understand an old friend. He hunted and fished with the patience of a man who listened more than he spoke. He camped beneath star-flecked skies and found divinity in the solitude of mountain trails and the hush of forest clearings. He gardened not as a hobby but as an act of communion with the earth. The same hands that turned the soil could stir a stewpot or flip a fish on a cast iron skillet with an artist’s touch. His cooking was rustic, hearty, and never without flavor, like the man himself.

He held the title of Eagle Scout with quiet pride and often traveled with the troops, shaping young men into respectful wanderers. He had a keen eye for birds and trees, delighting in naming them as if introducing old friends at a dinner party. His mind, even into his late years, was sharp, and he conquered crossword puzzles and sudoku as though they were merely morning rituals to limber up the intellect.

Jerry retired from Georgia Kraft, but he never truly stopped working; not when there were birds to identify, stories to tell, or weeds to pull from a stubborn bed of beans. He had a sense of humor that was dry, quick, and capable of putting a stranger at ease within minutes. Laughter came easily to him and was given freely to those around him.

His family will gather to honor and remember him at a graveside service at Oaknoll Memorial Gardens on Monday, March 31, 2025, at 2:00 PM. Chaplain Alan Fuller will officiate the ceremony.

Good Shepherd Funeral Home is humbled to serve the Flynt family at this time, as they honor a life so rich in love, landscape, and laughter.

Jerry Wesley Flynt has gone on ahead; perhaps to a place where the trout bite at dawn, the firewood never runs out, and the wind sings through the trees like the voice of an old friend saying, “You’ve done well.”
