In Loving Memory of Jessie Willard “J.W.” Herndon, Jr.
October 4, 1941 - August 6, 2024
Jessie Willard “J.W.” Herndon, Jr., age 82, of Rome, Georgia, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 6, 2024. Born on October 4, 1941, in Panama City, Florida, J.W. was the beloved son of the late Jessie Willard Herndon, Sr., and Eula Mae Smith Herndon.
J.W. leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, and unwavering kindness. He is survived by his son, Mark (Shannon) Herndon, and his adored grandchildren, Matthew Herndon and Mackenzie Herndon, who were the light of his life. J.W. is also survived by his sister, Francis Poitevient, who shared in the joys and sorrows of life with him. In addition to his parents, J.W. was preceded in death by his former spouse, Glenda Jean Herndon, and his sister, Bobbie Holley, who welcomed him into eternal peace.
J.W.’s professional journey was marked by nearly four decades of service with Georgia Power Company, where he began as a lineman, demonstrating remarkable dedication and skill. His hard work and commitment led to his advancement into training roles, and eventually, he earned the title of Safety and Health Advisor, a position in which he made significant contributions to the well-being of his colleagues. Known for his integrity and work ethic, J.W. was not just a respected professional but also a cherished coworker and friend, never meeting a stranger in his path.
A man of deep faith, J.W. was a long-time and faithful member of Fellowship Baptist Church. His life was a testament to his beliefs, as he found great joy in the simple pleasures of life, particularly in fly fishing, a pastime that allowed him to connect with nature and find peace. J.W. also had a special place in his heart for woodworking, a craft where he expressed his creativity and patience, transforming pieces of wood into beautiful and functional works of art. His creations were not just objects; they were reflections of the care and precision he applied to everything he did. J.W. also had a special place in his heart for his beloved fur babies, who brought him comfort and companionship.
J.W.’s warmth, generosity, and loving spirit touched the lives of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed, but his memory will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to have been part of his life.
The family will honor J.W.’s life with a service at Fellowship Baptist Church on Saturday, August 10, 2024.
