In Loving Memory of John Henry Godfrey February 5, 1948 – May 26, 2025 On Monday, May 26, 2025, Mr. John Henry Godfrey, seventy-seven, of Adairsville, Georgia, passed from this life to the next. He was born on February 5, 1948, in Floyd County, Georgia, to Flossie Craig. John was a man not easily summarized, for he was carved out of the long days and the red clay of this land; where time is measured in seasons and sorrows, and where a man’s labor tells the truth of him more than his words ever could. For forty-five years, he served the city of Rome, Georgia, not as a passing employee, but as one who gave the hours of his youth and the strength of his body until the clock and the streetlights and the solid waste department knew his name. It was not just work. It was stewardship. And it was joy. He is survived by his devoted wife, Barbara Godfrey, whose presence at his side was a constant testament to the quiet endurance of love. John’s legacy is further carried by his grandchildren, Ben Godfrey and Brittany Millians, and by the young voices and fast footsteps of his great-grandchildren: Hayden Godfrey, Caysin Godfrey, Gavin Godfrey, Tracy Millians, Gracie Millians, and Crash Clark. His sister, Sue Craig, remains, the last living thread of his earliest days, the shared memory keeper of the family’s old stories. John’s affections were simple and deep: his grandchildren, the animals he kept and cared for, and the hush and stillness of fishing. Those long hours of waiting, of patience, of quiet, where the world finally seemed to speak plainly. The family is still in the tender act of choosing the day on which John’s life will be honored publicly. When that time comes, services will be held at the Good Shepherd Funeral Home chapel, with Corey Smith presiding. Pallbearers will include Shawn Millians and Randy Tillery, who, in carrying him one final time, carry also the weight of memory and blood. There is a certain silence left in the world now, where John’s voice used to rise up in laughter or in counsel, where his footsteps stirred gravel, where his chair creaked in rhythm with the evening news. But it is not an empty silence. It is full of the echo of a life lived with constancy and care, and it lingers like smoke from a chimney long after the fire has gone out. The family has entrusted Good Shepherd Funeral Home with the arrangements, and in doing so, offers John into the hands of those who understand the sacredness of departue.
