John Hanks Obituary

In Loving Memory of John Thomas Hanks
July 23, 1949 – August 29, 2024

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of John Thomas Hanks, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. John passed away on Thursday, August 29, 2024, at the age of 75 in Lindale, Georgia. Born on July 23, 1949, in Rome, Georgia, John was the cherished son of the late Thomas White Hanks and Thelma Louise Fedlander Hanks, who instilled in him the values of hard work, integrity, and love for family.

John was the cornerstone of his family, leaving behind a legacy of love and resilience. He is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia Ellen Long Hanks, who stood by his side through every trial and triumph. Their marriage was a testament to enduring love and partnership, a bond that grew stronger with each passing year.

John was a proud father to his two sons, Johnny Wayne Hanks (Julia) and Paul Hanks, and his two daughters, Tabitha Gresham (Chris) and Amanda Hanks. His children remember him as a man always ready with a helping hand or a word of wisdom. He delighted in watching them grow and was immensely proud of the adults they became, each one a reflection of his best qualities.

As a grandfather, John's joy knew no bounds. His grandchildren—Krista Clark (Richard), Katie Casey (Preston), Brayden Hanks, Briana Caroll, Branson Hanks, Brinley Hanks, Halle Hedgewood, and Kaylan Eckleberry—were the light of his life. He took great pride in their accomplishments, big or small, and was always eager to share stories of their latest achievements. John’s great-grandchildren, Emmy Dover, Camden Potts, Kindel Casey, and Linley Ruth Eckleberry, brought him endless happiness, and he cherished every moment spent with them. His playful spirit and gentle nature will live on in their hearts.

John held a special place in his heart for his nieces, Stacey Kelley and Dawn Buttram Dole, whom he loved as if they were his own daughters. Also his special friend Dr. Charles Jackson; whose friendship he deeply valued. His kindness, generosity, and the warmth of his presence will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

John's life was one of service and passion. A proud veteran of the United States Army, John served his country with honor during the Vietnam War, a period that shaped his character and strengthened his resolve. His experiences in the military taught him the value of discipline, loyalty, and brotherhood, values he carried with him throughout his life.

After returning home, John pursued a career with Major Oil Products Gresham Transport, where he worked with dedication until his retirement. He was known for his strong work ethic, reliability, and unwavering commitment to his job. His colleagues remember him as a man of integrity who always went the extra mile to get the job done right.

Beyond his professional life, John was a man of many passions. He was an avid drag racer, finding thrill and joy in the roar of engines and the speed of the race. His love for drag racing was more than just a hobby; it was a way of life that brought him closer to a community of like-minded enthusiasts. His stories of the track, filled with excitement and camaraderie, were a favorite topic of conversation among friends and family.

John's greatest passion, however, was his family. He was a devoted family man who adored his wife, children, and grandchildren. His home was always open, a gathering place for holidays, celebrations, and everyday moments of togetherness. John believed that family was the most important thing in life, and he lived by that belief every day, creating countless memories that his loved ones will treasure forever.

John was preceded in death by his loving parents, Thomas White Hanks and Thelma Louise Fedlander Hanks; his dear mother and father-in-law, Hulin and Alene Long; his sister, Brenda Joyce Smith, with whom he shared a close bond.

A celebration of John’s life will be held on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, at Good Shepherd Funeral Home chapel. The family will receive friends and loved ones during the visitation beginning at 2:00 PM, followed by the funeral service at 4:00 PM. It will be a time to honor the life of a remarkable man who touched so many with his kindness, strength, and love.

In this time of mourning, the family finds comfort in the outpouring of support from those who knew John. His life was a testament to the impact one person can have on the lives of others, and his memory will continue to inspire and uplift all who had the privilege of knowing him.
