John Rhoten Obituary

In Loving Memory of John Charles Rhoten

January 23, 1971 – June 15, 2025

John Charles Rhoten, fifty-four, of Rome, Georgia, passed away on Sunday, June 15, 2025. Born on January 23, 1971, John was the son of the late Ed Robinson and Necay Hattie Salter, both of whom went before him into eternity.

John lived a life that could be measured not by accolades or fanfare, but by the quiet integrity of a man who worked with his hands, loved without condition, and gave without keeping count. He was, by trade and by nature, a builder of homes, of engines, of relationships, and of memories that now linger like sawdust in sunlight.

A self-employed carpenter and mechanic, John took deep pride in his work. Whether it was fine woodwork or the hum of a finely tuned motor, he found purpose in the labor of restoration. He had an instinct for fixing things, for mending what others might discard. It was not uncommon to find him in the garage late into the evening, grease on his hands and a satisfied look in his eye.

John’s heart, though, belonged most to his family. He was a father first and always loving and devoted to his sons, Joey Rhoten and Christopher Rhoten, who survive him. He also leaves behind three brothers: Richard Johnson, Andy Salter, and Donald Johnson, all of whom shared not only his blood, but countless childhood stories, laughter, and the occasional hard-earned lesson.

John found joy in simple pleasures: a day spent hunting in the still woods, the quiet thrill of fishing along the riverbank, the sound of tools in motion. Yet what delighted him most was the sound of children’s laughter. He especially cherished time spent with his nieces, Makayla Johnson and Lexus Johnson, with whom he shared games, stories, and his endless patience.

Those who knew John best remember him not just for what he did, but for the way he lived with a generous spirit, a deep love for others, and a willingness to put everyone else’s needs before his own. He was the kind of man who showed up, stayed late, and gave freely, never expecting anything in return.

In accordance with his wishes, John will be cremated. A memorial service to honor his life will be held at a later date, where stories will be told, tears shared, and the enduring light of his memory celebrated.
