John "Jack" Dickey Obituary

With profound sadness and cherished memories, we announce the passing of John “Jack” Burgess Dickey, aged 83, of Rome, Georgia, on Friday, January 19, 2024. Born to Deryll Abbott Dickey and Martha Hogan McCurdy on September 4, 1940, in Atlanta, Georgia, Jack was a man of integrity, intelligence, and indomitable spirit.

Preceded in death by his parents, his cherished wife Ruth Rebecca “Becky” Davis Dickey, and his brother David Jeffrey Dickey, Jack’s legacy continues through his sisters, Debbie Barlow (Terry), Dionne Lowry, and Denise Dent (Mike), who remember him with love and admiration.

A proud alumnus of Model High School, Class of 1958, Jack remained actively involved in alumni activities, cherishing the bonds formed during those formative years. His educational journey continued at Berry College, where he graduated in 1962. Jack’s passion for community service was evident in his role as a Floyd County Commissioner and as President of the Georgia Crop Improvement Association. He was especially known for his instrumental role in organizing the annual Memorial Services in Shannon, Georgia. He was also the owner operator of Dickey Feed and seed company.

Jack's career choice as a farmer was more than a profession; it was a testament to his love of nature and respect for the land. His insatiable curiosity, love of learning, and analytical mind made him a natural historian, passionate about preserving and sharing local history. His contributions to historical writing and education in local communities were immeasurable.

As a fervent promoter of education and a respected historian, Jack left an indelible mark on those who had the privilege of learning from him. His life was a tapestry of service, learning, and love for his community.

The family warmly invites friends and loved ones to join them in celebrating Jack's remarkable life. The memorial service will be held on Sunday, February 4, 2024, at 3:00 PM at The Scout Cabin at "Shag" Williams Park in Shannon, Georgia. Jack will be laid to rest at Rush Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery on Friday, January 26.

Arrangements for Jack's memorial have been entrusted to Parnick Jennings Good Shepherd Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Model High School Alumni Association, in honor of Jack's enduring love for his alma mater and his commitment to education and community heritage.

Jack’s life was a journey of dedication, wisdom, and compassion, leaving an enduring legacy in the hearts of all who knew him.
