Lillian Idamae Mitchell Dillard
September 1, 1946 – January 30, 2025
Lillian Idamae Mitchell Dillard, age 78, of Rome, Georgia, departed this world on Thursday, January 30, 2025, leaving behind a tapestry of memories as rich and enduring as the lands of her beloved South. Born on September 1, 1946, to the late Grady and Thelma Mitchell, Lillian lived a life woven with threads of deep faith, family devotion, and a passion for the simple, soulful pleasures of home.
In her steadfast presence, family was both the canvas and the color. She is survived by her cherished husband, James W. Dillard, Sr; her devoted son, James W. Dillard, Jr; her beloved daughters, Alicia Brown (Kevin) and Teresa Gunnels (Phillip); and her treasured grandchildren, Adam Brown, Holly Brown, Matthew Gunnels, Aaron Gunnels, Gracie Gunnels, Jerry Clayton and great grandson Steven Clayton. Her sisters, Doris Overby, Shirley Palmer, and Cathy Mitchell, remain by her side in spirit, joined by memories of her brother, Lamar Mitchell, who preceded her in death.
Lillian’s life was a testament to love for her family and an abiding love for God. A devoted member of First Assembly of God for many years, she carried her faith like a lantern in the dusk, lighting the way for those who journeyed with her. Her kitchen was a sacred space of creativity and care; the aroma of her legendary apple cake and chocolate cake became a beacon of warmth and welcome at countless gatherings. Each slice, every shared bite, spoke of a life dedicated to nurturing others, much like the care she lavished upon her prized blooms. Lillian’s love for flowers was a joy to behold, for each bouquet was not merely a display of nature’s beauty but a story waiting to be told, a narrative of seasons past and hopes for the future. And always by her side was Peanut, her faithful dog, a small yet steadfast companion in a life filled with quiet, heartfelt devotion.
Lillian’s life will be celebrated with a visitation on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at 6:00 PM, followed by a funeral service on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, at 12:00 PM, both to be held at the Good Shepherd Funeral Home chapel, 2750 Shorter Avenue, Rome, Georgia 30165. Her journey will be honored by the presence of honorary pallbearers Kevin Brown, Phillip Gunnels, Randle Gibson, Adam Brown, Jerry Clayton, and Howard Mullinax. In the gentle echoes of her memory, Lillian leaves behind a legacy of faith, family, and the timeless art of living with love.
The arrangements have been entrusted to Parnick Jennings Good Shepherd Funeral Home, ensuring that every detail reflects the grace and dignity of a life well-lived.
