In Loving Memory of Margaret Tanner Barroso
August 18, 1939 – September 23, 2024
Margaret Tanner Barroso, age 85, of Rome, Georgia, passed peacefully into eternal rest on Monday, September 23, 2024. Born on August 18, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Raymond Tanner and Edna Harris Tanner, and lived a life marked by love, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to her family and community.
Margaret’s journey through life was one of quiet strength and selflessness. She was a woman who wore many hats, excelling in every role she took on. A devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, she dedicated herself fully to the people she loved. Margaret raised not only her own children but extended that same care to others, nurturing her grandchildren and any child who needed a place to feel safe and loved. Her warmth and compassion were felt far beyond her own household.
Margaret’s family was her world. She is survived by her sons, Mark Johnny Lawrence, Mark Alexander, Lawrence Highfield, and Johnny Highfield, along with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, each of whom carry on her legacy of love. Her sister, Edna Allen, remains as a cherished sibling who shared in Margaret’s lifelong journey.
In addition to her parents, Margaret is reunited in Heaven with her husband, Jessie Barroso. She also joins her children who preceded her in death—her sons, Terry Highfield and Gary Highfield, and her daughters, Janice Reynolds and Melissa Alexander. Margaret was also preceded by her brothers, Arthur, James, and Daniel Tanner, and her sisters, Tressie Tanner and Yvonne Tanner.
Margaret was no stranger to hard work. As a single mother, she worked tirelessly to support her family, driving a bus for the Atlanta EOA, helping those in need navigate their daily lives. She also became a Certified Nurse’s Aide, devoting countless hours to the care of others. Her nurturing nature made her a beloved figure in the lives of her patients and their families. She had a heart full of empathy, and her dedication to her role as a caretaker was evident in every life she touched.
While her life was filled with work and responsibility, Margaret found joy in the simple things. She loved to play Bingo, and her competitive spirit shone bright during games, where she made many friends. Her love for family outings and gatherings always filled her home with laughter and warmth. Family was her everything, and she was their steadfast foundation through every triumph and trial.
Margaret’s life is a testament to resilience, love, and unwavering faith. She raised her children on her own, instilling in them the values of hard work, dedication, and kindness. Her hands, which once held her children's hands and cared for her patients, now rest, but her legacy lives on through the many lives she shaped.
The family will gather to honor Margaret's life and legacy on Saturday, September 28, 2024, at the Good Shepherd Funeral Home chapel. Visitation will begin at 12:00 PM, with a service led by Pastor Ray Miles following at 2:00 PM. Pallbearers will include Nathan Clark, Brandon Alexander, Jacob Nelson, Allen Clark, Bubba Kelly and Danny Carico, all of whom will lovingly carry Margaret to her final resting place at East View Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest.
