Marie Nichelson Couey, age 94, of Rome, Georgia, passed away on November 21, 2024, A native of Aragon, Georgia, Mrs. Couey was born on February 20, 1930, a daughter of the late Homer F. Nichelson, Ida Curtis Nichelson, and stepdaughter of Louise Brock Nichelson. Mrs. Couey was a devoted wife and mother. She placed her family’s needs ahead of her own. She followed her husband from the east coast to the west coast and back again during his time in the military, before settling in Rome, Georgia. She felt great joy in laughing and spending time with both family and friends. This love of family was instilled in her daughter, having grown up with wonderful childhood experiences similar to those of her mother. Mrs. Couey and her beloved husband would take long rides to the mountains, enjoying the scenery along the way. Her favorite trips were those shared with family members. Mrs. Couey was an East Rome High School band parent. She attended East Rome High School football games to support the band and was very overjoyed when the football team made a “home run”. She was also a Jacksonville State University parent, and a fan of the Marching Southerners.
Mrs. Couey was a passionate animal lover. She also enjoyed cooking for her family and was known for her perfectly round, half dollar size biscuits. Mrs. Couey was a member of Hicksville Church in Aragon, Georgia, (known to some as Euharlee).
Mrs. Couey is survived by her daughter, Teresa Darlene Couey, son-in-law, Doug Callaway, “bonus” daughter, Tammy Bryant, sister-in-law, Gladys Mullins Couey, and several much-loved nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Couey’s family will receive friends and family on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, from 11:30 AM until 12:30 PM at Good Shepherd Funeral Home.
