Milford "Gary" Merritt Obituary

Milford Robert “Gary” Merritt, a soul of boundless melody and unwavering spirit, departed this earthly realm on Saturday, February 15, 2025. Born beneath the golden sun of Los Angeles, California, on the February 21, 1954, he was the cherished son of the late Elmo Milford Merritt and Beatrice Cullum.

Gary’s heart found its greatest joy in the warmth of family. His devoted wife, Polly Bell Merritt, walked beside him in love and faith, a steadfast companion through life’s many harmonies. His sons, Jamie L. Merritt, Jody Champion (Diane), and Robert Redmond (Starla), were the echoes of his legacy, carrying forward his strength and kindness. His grandchildren, Kelsy Champion, Kaleb Champion, and Lester Merritt, were his pride and delight, each one a bright note in the song of his life. A Special MOTHER in law Lucy C. Harrison. Among his kin, his brother, Larry Apodaca, and his dear sisters, Cecile Fredrickson, Patsy Hanson, Linda Milburn, Penny Leber, and Judy Restani, remain to treasure his memory. Preceding him in rest was his brother, David Russell. Constantly his side, until Gary’s final breath, was his faithful and beloved fur baby, Sarge, whose loyalty was as steadfast as the love that surrounded him.

A patriot in both heart and duty, Gary served with honor in the United States Air Force, his commitment to his country as resolute as the chords he struck upon his beloved guitar. Music coursed through his veins, a gift he poured into the world with a gentle hand and a resonant voice. With strings beneath his fingertips and hymns upon his lips, he lifted spirits at West End Baptist Church, where he was a devoted member for seven years. His melodies graced the humble halls of McDonald’s as well as the gatherings of the Georgia Mountain Music Club, where he strummed and sang, weaving self-penned bluegrass tales of joy, sorrow, and faith.

A man of many talents, Gary once soared upon the courts of Union Hill, Alabama, his skill in basketball earning him All-State honors in 1972. Yet even as time led him from the courts to a career in training within a warehouse, his true calling remained ever in the music that filled his soul and the love he shared with those around him.

His was a life lived in harmony, full to the brim with faith, service, and song. Though he now rests in the eternal embrace of his Maker, the echoes of his laughter, his music, and his love shall linger on in the hearts of all who knew him.
