Mr. Monty Rufus Nelson, age 87, of Rome, Georgia, passed away on Monday morning, June 16, in Owens Cross Roads, Alabama surrounded by family.
Born in Rome, Georgia, on June 10, 1938, Monty was the son of the late Rufus Andrew Nelson and the late Harriet Louise Daniel Nelson. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Judith Bone Nelson, his son Barry Alan Nelson, and his brothers Hubert, Robert (Dobby), Darrell, Gerald, and Larry Nelson. Monty was a member of Pleasant Valley North Baptist Church. At the age of 18, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, and after his service, he began a career at General Electric, from which he eventually retired. Additionally, Monty spent many years working at Huff’s Pharmacy. He will be fondly remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Monty cherished spending time with his family, his dog Bobo, fishing, visiting the mountains, and dining at the local Waffle House, where he was well-known and adored by everyone.
Monty is survived by his wife, Cherri (Patsy) Tucker Nelson; his son, Bradley Todd Nelson (Cynthia); his daughters, Melody Nelson Burke (Patrick) and Leigh Ann Tucker Johnson (Kenny); his grandchildren, Ross Evan Nelson (Brittney), Dustin Corey Nelson, Seth Nelson Burke, Judith Dianne Nelson, Brandon Fredrick Nelson, Conner Nelson Radziwon, Haley Johnson Sizemore (Derek), and Jaycie Johnson; and his great-grandchildren, Logan Nelson, Alora Nelson, Raven Nelson, Kaiden Nelson, and River Sizemore. He is also survived by his sisters, Donna Nelson Tolbert (Lamar) and Wanda Nelson Smith (Tommy), his brother Ronald Nelson, several nieces and nephews, and his loyal dog Bobo.
The family will receive family and friends at Good Shepherd Funeral Home on Saturday, June 21, 2025, at 3:00 P.M., with a memorial service to follow at 4:30 with Rev. Billy Fricks officiating.
