Robert Michael Abernathy,59, of Gadsen, Alabama, passed away on Thursday, October 12, 2023, after a brief illness. He was born in the picturesque town of Rome, Georgia, on September 7, 1964, to his proud parents, Benny Eugene Abernathy and Doris Eloise Wright. 

Robert will be greeted into eternity by his brother, Leonard Abernathy. Robert is survived by his beloved wife, Kimberly Dawn Abernathy, who shared in his joys and supported him through thick and thin. His legacy extends to his sons: Dean Hansbarger, who found a loving partner in Becky; Benny Abernathy and his devoted wife Shaleisa; and Robert Abernathy, Jr., who was accompanied by his loving spouse, Tasha. Robert's daughters, Heather Cook and Amy Abernathy, also carry on his spirit, with Heather finding happiness alongside Joseph Autry and Amy with her loving partner, Michael Rinker.

Robert's circle of family extended to his brothers, Randy Abernathy and Tommy Abernathy, who stood by him through life's ups and downs. Additionally, Robert was blessed with the joy of sixteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, who were the apple of his eye. His face would light up with a radiant smile every time he was in their presence.

Robert's talents extended beyond the warmth of his family. He possessed a remarkable ability to understand and mend the intricate mechanisms of complex engines. This skill led him to a fulfilling career as a diesel mechanic at Railport Services. His colleagues admired his expertise and dedication to his work, which earned him a living and a sense of fulfillment.

Retirement allowed Robert to pursue his true passion: spending time with his family. It was a time of celebration for him as he witnessed his children growing into adulthood and starting their own families. The bonds he shared with his grandchildren were exceptional and brought immeasurable joy to his life. Each moment spent with them was a testament to his love and devotion to his family.

Today, we say our final goodbyes to Robert, and we do so with the utmost respect and gratitude. As pallbearers, Jeremiah Golden, Noah Garrett, Joshuah Garrett, Benny Abernathy, Robert Abernathy, Jr., Brandon Peterson, and Shaleisa Abernathy will carry him to his resting place. Pastor William Ford, a guiding light in Robert's spiritual journey, will officiate the service.

In honor of Robert's life, the family invites you to join them on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, for a visitation at 2:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 3:00 PM.
