With heavy hearts, we commemorate the life of Ronald “Ronnie” Coleman Lee Stokes, who passed away at the age of 76 on December 21, 2023, in Rome, Georgia. Ronald was born on October 18, 1947, in Rome, Georgia, to Fred Lee Stokes and Rosa Faye Padgett Stokes Bray, a lineage he carried with pride throughout his life.
Ronnie's life journey leaves footprints of love, dedication, and faith. He is lovingly remembered by his son, Ron Stokes; his daughter, Melanie Shirley (Frank); his adored grandchildren, Frankie Shirley, Jr. (Jordan), Brettany Shirley, Zachary Shirley, Cole Stokes, Jacob Shirley, Rachael Shirley, and Chloe Stokes; and his precious great-grandchild, Everleigh Shirley. He is also survived by his brother, Eddie Stokes (Tesha), his sister, Patsy Stokes Toles, and several nieces and nephews.
Ronnie married his high school sweetheart, Janice Norton, on June 12, 1971. Together, they embarked on a journey of love, exploring the United States and creating a lifetime of memories.
Ronnie was a proud alumnus of Coosa High School and Coosa Valley Technical School. His early career at Lockheed was followed by honorable service in the United States Army and a tour in Vietnam. Upon his return, he delved into computer programming, earning a degree from Coosa Valley Tech. He later studied data processing at Floyd College. Ronnie eventually found his calling in the Pest Control industry, treating his clients at Allgood Pest Control, Orkin, and Rome Pest Control not just as customers but as extended family.
Retirement for Ronnie was not an end but a new beginning, filled with the joy of spending more time with his beloved family. His children were his pride, and his grandchildren were the jewels in the crown of his life. Ronnie dearly loved his two children, Melanie and Ron Stokes. He would get a twinkle in his eye when his precious grandchildren were around.
Ronnie loved God with all his heart. A devout Christian, Ronnie’s faith was the cornerstone of his life. He was a dedicated member of West Rome Baptist Church, where he was known for his generous spirit. Each year he would spend countless hours researching the best cookie recipes and endless hours baking cookies from scratch. He would then share the delectable fruits of his labor throughout the community. His humor, love for golf, and team play in Rome were other facets of his vibrant personality that he lovingly shared with everyone. Ronnie was also an avid gardener. He would never dream of keeping the treasures of his garden to himself. Instead, he showed love for everyone he met by sharing his vegetables from his garden. His love for his family, church, and community was immense and unconditional, matched only by his profound love for the Lord.
The celebration of Ronnie’s life will be held at West Rome Baptist Church on Saturday, December 30, 2023. Family, friends, and those whose lives were touched by Ronnie are invited to join in remembrance and tribute. Visitation will be from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM, and the funeral will begin immediately following at 2:00 PM. West Rome Baptist Church is located at 914 Shorter Avenue Northwest, Rome, Georgia 30165. Lead Pastor Jarrod Roberts and Executive Pastor Topher Stockton will officiate the services. Interment will follow at Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.
The pallbearers will be Frank Shirley, Frankie Shirley, Zachary Shirley, Matthew Norton, Daniel Norton, and Jeremy Edmondson.
