Russell Candler Hawkins, born on October 17, 1962, a beloved member of the community, passed away on January 2, 2024, at the age of 61.
Devoted father, son and proud grandfather, Russell leaves behind his parents Winfred Hawkins and Diane Ruppe, his long-time loving fiancé, Kelli Singleton, his daughters Kelli Godfrey (Ben) and Kendall Singleton, his son Kevin Singleton, his grandchildren Gavin, Hayden, and Caysin Godfrey, who proudly called him Poppy and a host of uncles, aunts, and cousins, all of whom will cherish the memories they shared with him. Russell was preceded in death by his step-father, Robert (Bob) Ruppe.
Russell had a passion for classic cars, particularly his cherished Corvette, and thoroughly enjoyed watching classic car auctions like Barrett-Jackson and Mecum. He was also known for his love of cats and had rescued two, Gurl and Smut, who were a constant source of joy and companionship in his life.
A proud graduate of West Rome High School, Class of 1980, Russell went on to serve his country in the Army's esteemed 82nd Airborne Division from 1980 to 1984. As a dedicated school bus driver, Russell found immense fulfillment in transporting and caring for the kids he came to know and love. In 2014, Russell achieved another milestone as he graduated from Georgia Northwestern Technical College as a Pharmacy Technician. This accomplishment showcased his unwavering determination and his commitment to personal growth.
Apart from his automotive pursuits and dedication to his profession, Russell also thrived in his involvement with the Southern Cruisers Motorcycle Club. Riding motorcycles brought him a sense of freedom and camaraderie like no other. Russell will forever be remembered as a proud GA Bulldog fan. Whether he was cheering on his favorite team or wearing their colors, his enthusiasm and loyalty were unwavering.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at the Good Shepherd Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, January 6, 2024, from 12:00 PM until the service begins at 2:00 PM.
