Shirley C Shaffer

April 26, 2023

Obituary

Shirley Corbin Bain Shaffer, sixty-nine years young, was born on February 1, 1954, in Rome, GA. She passed away on Wednesday, April 26, 2023, at her home after fighting a short battle with an aggressively consuming form of lung cancer.

Shirley had a heart as big as the Sun. Shirley was a lover of all animals and had a large collection of cats because they all gravitated to her. She made sure to spay and neuter every cat that landed on her doorstep. Betty White and Bob Barker would be proud! She even fed a bear Oreos in Colorado when she worked construction. She was there for everybody, easy to talk to, and nonjudgmental. She was a teacher of life situations and readily handed out advice on how to make life better whether you liked what she said or not. She could be stubborn and mean, but she was always true to her word. She said that all she had was her integrity. She was a friend for life, but if you crossed her you were done.

Of all the jobs she ever held Shirley most enjoyed being a CNA. She thoroughly loved her work with the elderly because they had so much knowledge and they never sugarcoated the truth, and all she had to do was listen. She also loved driving a school bus and adopting all the kids. Shirley also cherished the thrill of driving a big rig over the road with her husband Roy and later with her sister Joyce. She loved working on a construction crew at Rocky Mountain Project in Rome and at a gold mine in Victor, Colorado.

Shirley is preceded in death by her mother Susie Qualls Corbin, her husband Benny Bain, and her great-granddaughter Sally Mae Walker. She is survived by her husband Roy E Shaffer Jr., her children, Sandra JB Walker (Nathan), Debbie E Turner (Keith), Jonathan A Shaffer, and Danny Bain (Nancy), her, sisters, Joyce A Holland (Jerry), and Carolyn Bair her brother, Wayne Corbin. Shirley also leaves behind seven grandchildren, Cory, Christine, Alex, Ben, Katelynn, Baylee, and Emily, and four great-grandchildren Scarlett, Will, Elizabeth, and William.

The family will hold a visitation on Monday, May 1, 2023, from 6 PM until 8 PM. The funeral will take place on Tuesday, May 2, 2023, at 2 PM. Both the visitation and the funeral will be held at Good Shepherd Funeral Home - 2750 Shorter Avenue, Rome. Shirley will be laid to rest at Oaknoll Cemetery.
