Steven Joe Hughes, aged 69, of Rome, Georgia, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 13, 2024. Born on December 19, 1954, he was the beloved son of Martha Geneva Wooten Hughes and the late Joe Hughes.

Steve leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion, survived by his mother, Martha; his cherished daughter, Morgan Angelique Hughes; and his treasured son-in-law, Robert Funck. His memory lives on through his grandchildren, Elijah, Presley, and Miles Funck, who were the light of his life. He is also survived by his brothers, Bobby Hughes and Michael Hughes, and his sister, Dianne Fuller.

A man of many passions, Steve was an ardent sports enthusiast, particularly devoted to the University of Georgia Bulldogs. His love for the Bulldogs was so profound that he often said he bled red and black. Yet, his greatest devotion was reserved for his family. Steven's bond with his daughter, Morgan, was unbreakable; she was the apple of his eye, and his grandchildren were the jewels of his heart.

Steve's admiration for his mother was unwavering, proudly embracing the title of mama’s boy. His home was a sanctuary of joy, where he meticulously maintained a swimming pool to create a haven for his family. He cherished every moment spent with them, creating memories that will be forever cherished.

With a heart full of compassion, Steve found immense joy in nurturing children's potential. He dedicated much of his time to coaching softball, instilling confidence and courage in young athletes. His encouragement and belief in their abilities left an indelible mark on their lives.

Throughout his career at Shaw Industries, Steven exemplified an incredible work ethic, working with unwavering dedication until his retirement. His friendly demeanor and genuine kindness meant he never met a stranger, viewing everyone he encountered as a friend he hadn’t met yet.

A service to honor Steve’s remarkable life will be held on Saturday, July 20, 2024, at the Good Shepherd Funeral Home chapel. Visitation will begin at 12:00 PM, followed by the funeral service at 2:00 PM. Pallbearers Michael Hughes, Bobby Hughes, Levi Jiles, Jamie Hughes, Bert Funck, and Don Thacker will accompany him to his final resting place.
