In Loving Memory of Thelma Ida Mae Gillespie Mitchell
Sunset: February 21, 2024
Thelma Ida Mae Gillespie Mitchell, 95, of Rome, Georgia, passed away on Wednesday, February 21, 2024. Idamae was a beacon of love, faith, and unwavering strength, illuminating the lives of all who knew her.
Born to Allen Jefferson Gillespie and Lillian Maybelle Jones Gillespie in Alabama, Thelma's life was a tribute to the power of unwavering faith and the beauty of a life devoted to family and God. She was predeceased by her parents, her loving husband, Grady Mitchell, and her dear son, Lamar Mitchell. Her sisters, Evelyn and Jean Tucker, along with many beloved nieces and nephews, have now welcomed her into eternal rest.
Thelma's legacy is carried on by her daughters Doris Jean Overby (Robert Jerry), Cathy Mitchell, Lillian Dillard (James), and Shirley Palmer (Clarence), along with a lineage that spans eleven grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren and twelve great-great-grandchildren. Each of them was a jewel in her crown, bringing immense joy and pride to her life. They will forever treasure the memories and the immeasurable love she shared with them.
For over fifty years, Thelma served her community and the Lord by teaching Sunday School, embodying the virtues of faith, hope, and charity. Her dedication to ministering in jails and prisons was driven by a compassionate heart that saw beyond people's circumstances, recognizing their need for encouragement and salvation. Idamae's life was a living sermon, deeply rooted in God's Word, showcasing her as an exemplary wife, mother, sister, and grandmother. She faithfully brought her children and grandchildren to church with her, and her unwavering commitment to fostering her family's spiritual growth brought her indescribable joy.
Thelmas virtuous life was a mirror of Proverbs 31—she was a woman of noble character, whose worth far exceeds that of rubies. The love, kindness, and gentle spirit she bestowed upon everyone she met will be sorely missed. Her absence leaves a void that cannot be filled, but her spirit and teachings will continue to inspire those she has left behind.
To honor Thelma's remarkable journey, a celebration of her life will be held on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, at the Good Shepherd Funeral Home Chapel, 2750 Shorter Avenue, Rome, GA 30165. Visitation will take place from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, immediately followed by the funeral service at 2:00 PM. Pastor Jimmy Gentry of Garden Lakes Baptist Church will officiate. The final resting place will be Oaknoll Memorial Gardens, 2549 Shorter Ave, Rome, GA 30165, where she will be laid to rest.
Thelma's life was a blessing, her memory a treasure. She is loved beyond words and will be missed beyond measure.
The Parnick Jennings Good Shepherd Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
